Murat Keyder was born in 1986 in Istanbul to a Turkish father and an American mother. He grew up surrounded by the sounds of both cultures, and started learning both guitar and oud at a young age. He moved to America when he was 16, and currently lives in New York City after several years in upstate New York and Philadelphia. In addition to composing original music for guitar, oud, and other instruments, he plays classical and folk music from Turkey and surrounding countries on the oud as well as several different styles of music on classical, acoustic, and electric guitar. He holds a masters degree in anthropology of music from Upenn and currently teaches guitar there in addition to teaching private lessons in New York City on guitar and oud. He performs extensively in New York City and Philadelphia both as a soloist and in group settings, and has licenced and composed music for several short films and documentaries.
