Murat teaches oud and guitar lessons and is currently accepting new students. He offers both in person lessons (in the NYC area) and online classes to students of all levels ranging from complete beginner to advanced.
He has taught oud and guitar for the last 15 years in 1-on-1 settings as well as in classrooms. His teaching career began at UPenn where he taught classes on world music and gave guitar lessons while pursuing a Masters in Musical Anthropology.
He tailors his teaching to both the student’s musical interests and their preferred learning style.
For oud teaching, he has taught students from the middle east or with middle eastern heritage as well as those with no connection to the region besides their love of the music. His lessons may be centered around learning a specific set of songs requested by the student. While originally trained in traditional Turkish music, Murat has experience playing music from a range of countries, including Iraq, Yemen, and Iran.
Whether on oud or guitar, he enjoys breaking down music theory as well as teaching in a way purely related to playing. Lessons are always structured towards the styles of music that the student is most interested in, whether it's pop/rock or classical guitar.
